Leviticus chapter 16 covers the entire procedure for the Day of Atonement. It seems that the message (or at least one of them) is that God takes sin seriously, and so should we. That didn’t stop with the New Covenant.
Leviticus 16:34 ESV
[34] And this shall be a statute forever for you, that atonement may be made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins.” And Aaron did as the Lord commanded Moses.
