Anger = filthiness = rampant wickedness? That is the connection being made here.
We are told to be meek instead. Moses was described as meek. Jesus was described as meek. Surely meek does not mean weak. Humble. Gentle. Peacemaker. Yes. Those are not signs of weakness.
An angry man could have strength but with no self-control. One who is meek can be one with tremendous strength and power (like Jesus) but with restraint and self-control. He could have called legions of angels, but submitted to the Father instead.
We have a choice when difficult situations arise to be one or the other. I have blown it more times than I care to admit. I thank God for His grace and forgiveness.
James 1:19-21 ESV
[19] Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; [20] for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. [21] Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
