It seems kind of crazy that Aaron listened to the people instead of rebuking them. He had seen God move in incredible ways, even been part of it, in the not too distant past. It was his brother up on the mountain, for crying out loud!
He was pressured to follow the crowd, and he gave in.
Whether it be the temptation to overt sin, compromise in the church, or staying silent in a culture that runs after money, power, and sex, we should be careful to think we could never fashion a golden calf, or serve “other gods”.
It happens all the time.
Exodus 32:1 ESV
[1] When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”
